Hellloooo friends! Today, I'm sharing the itinerary of my vacation in Tuscany with you! What a beautiful region, 9 days of living and feeling Italy just like in the movies.
Our first stop: the city of Lucca
Or Lucca in Italian. What an extraordinary little town, entirely surrounded by well-preserved medieval ramparts, its picturesque narrow streets and its authentic atmosphere will undoubtedly charm you. The Cathedral of San Martino is a masterpiece of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, famous for its richly decorated interior. The iconic Guinigi Tower is adorned with oak trees on its summit. Climbing to the very top offers a spectacular panoramic view of the city and the surrounding mountains.
We head back down and enjoy an Italian aperitivo before finding a spot to treat our taste buds. The city is famous for its excellent cuisine. 1 or 2 nights in Lucca are enough (we found a gem of a hotel that I will be thrilled to share with you) and we hit the road again heading towards Pisa.
We all know the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is absolutely magnificent when you get up close. The details carved into the marble are sublime. Construction of the Tower began in 1173, but it quickly began to lean due to the unstable ground. They tried to straighten the tower as they went on, but it was impossible. It will remain this way. Pisa is also known for the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta: a Romanesque church decorated with beautiful mosaics.
Visit Florence, the magnificent
We continue the journey with a new stop, and a major one at that: Firenze, the capital of Tuscany, known for its incredible architecture and romance. We found exceptional, budget-friendly accommodation right in the city center. What an address!
Then, of course, everything can be visited on foot. Stroll along the Ponte Vecchio, an iconic bridge lined with jewelers' shops offering a picturesque view of the Arno. Florence is the cradle of the Renaissance: it was the artistic and intellectual center of Europe in the 15th century, thanks to the patronage of the Medici. The must-see is definitely the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, famous for its massive dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. What a beauty to admire up close. Also make sure to visit the Uffizi Gallery: one of the most important museums in the world, housing masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo.
Heading to the South of Tuscany and the Val D'Orcia
We hit the road towards Arezzo, a small medieval town 1 hour south of Florence. Famous for its medieval and artistic heritage, you will enjoy imagining the knights of the time wandering through the heart of the town. It offers an authentic atmosphere, far from the crowds.
Let's continue the journey towards the Val d'Orcia, famous for its superb rolling hills, on top of which imposing stone houses (and sometimes a tower) are systematically perched. The famous avenues of cypresses leading to the entrances of the homes are the emblem of this region, we love it! We stayed for 2 nights in a wonderful agriturismo with a swimming pool, in a tiny village: Campiglia d'Orcia. Perfect for visiting the surroundings: Montepulciano, Montalcino, which are absolutely charming typical villages to visit. A regional wine tasting is also not to be missed! It's a delight! I highly recommend trying the Brunello di Montalcino.
Discover Siena and Chianti
Now let's head back up towards the wonderful Siena and the Chianti region, also famous for its vineyards. This way, you can compare the wines of both regions as they are very different. Personally, I have my favorite, what will yours be?
Siena is a must-visit city. With its famous Piazza del Campo and its Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece in black and white marble. If you are there in the middle of summer, don't miss the famous horse race on the Piazza, which takes place twice during the season.
On the foodie side, Tuscany is famous for its Pici, which are thick local pastas served with various sauces, such as duck ragout or garlic sauce. They are delicious, I highly recommend them.
We then ended our stay in a new agriturismo in the heart of Chianti and took the opportunity to visit San Gimignano and Volterra. The choice of accommodation is very important for an extraordinary experience. I have plenty to share with you, shall we talk about it?
